Interdisciplinary about gynecology and obstetrics

The student conference "Gynecology and Obstetrics Interdisciplinarily" was held within the walls of our university. The event brought together more than 350 participants from all over Poland interested in a broader perspective on women's reproductive health. The Student Scientific Circle at the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology MUW invited them to participate in the deliberations.

This was the fifth edition of the largest event in Poland dedicated to these fields of study, whose targets are students. But not only, as the participant could be anyone interested in gynecology and obstetrics.

- The priority of the event is to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of the field of medicine focused on patient health and to create opportunities for knowledge exchange between students, midwives and doctors - says Emilia Piotrkowicz, chairwoman of the organizing committee for this year's conference.

How important this event is was emphasized during the opening of the conference by Zofia Włodarczyk, a member of the committee:

- The conference has been the most important project for our scientific circle for several years. It brings us great satisfaction and great joy, enabling us to explore together the extraordinary specialty of gynecology and obstetrics.

- This is the thing to follow in medical life - Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of MUW, who took patronage of the conference and was also one of the speakers, said to the participants of the event - To deal with what interests us, makes us passionate, gives us the greatest pleasure.

The rector congratulated the organizers for the tremendous amount of work put into preparing the symposium, as well as the high level of the event.

Lecture sessions

Participants attended expert lectures given by specialists from our university, the Silesian Medical University and the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education. All of them were very interesting and concerned current interdisciplinary topics.

The first speaker was Professor Zbigniew Gaciong, who talked about hypertension in pregnancy and the latest scientific reports in this area. What did he pay attention to?

- We need to have more data on whether indeed those women who develop hypertension in pregnancy should be given special care later on as those with an increased risk of complications in old age. What is important practical information is that more intensive control of blood pressure is certainly safe for the baby, and can benefit the pregnant woman - Professor Zbigniew Gaciong concluded.

Prof. Artur Ludwin spoke about the defect of the cesarean section scar in the context of the increasing percentage of cesarean sections; Prof. Marek Kudła on the diagnosis and surgical qualification of ovarian cancer; Prof. Jacek Malejczyk on the etiopathogenesis of endometriosis and the diagnostic and clinical implications. Iwona Szymusik, MD, PhD, raised the issue of diagnosis and treatment of infertile patients, while Radosław Tymiński, PhD in legal sciences, talked about the origins of lawsuits against doctors.

The second day of the conference began with a lecture by Dr. Barbara Suchońska, who devoted her talk to HPV vaccination.

- We are all accustomed to the fact that the basic test performed at the time of diagnosis is the cytological examination - the expert said - This test is from the first half of the 20th century, and it has not disappointed the hopes placed in it: it has saved millions of women's lives. In contrast, today the approach to diagnosis is changing, related to the fact that in the second half of the twentieth century we learned the culprit of all the fuss and know that the cause of cervical pathology is papillomavirus infection. We can detect the virus, we know its biology and we know how it causes changes on the cervix. And what has already succeeded in the 21st century: we are able to protect ourselves from infection by this virus, thanks to the fact that a proven HPV vaccine has been invented and put into practice - we can already say at the moment.

The following also gave lectures: Prof. Krzysztof Nowosielski, who answered the question of whether only a gynecologist is involved in the prevention and early diagnosis of gynecologic cancers; Prof. Karolina Dżaman, MD, PhD, who discussed the problem of apnea in pregnant women, Dr. Monika Grymowicz with a topic on oncofertility, and Przemysław Kosiński, MD, PhD, who raised questions on modern possibilities for screening and prevention of preeclampsia.

- Congratulations to the winners of all sessions, we are honored that you were willing to present the results of your scientific research before our committee and before us. We hope that participation in our conference will motivate you to continue your scientific activities - said Emilia Piotrkowicz, chairwoman of the organizing committee for this year's conference.

Workshops

Additional practical skills and knowledge could be gained at workshops accompanying the conference. Participants could choose from workshops on: Gynecological and obstetric ultrasound, laparoscopy, communication with patients, cancer prevention. And also learn how to surgically repair the perineum after childbirth, what interdisciplinary cooperation between a physiotherapist and a gynecologist should look like, and learn the secrets of breastfeeding during a workshop with a lactation consultant. And in the high fidelity rooms, hold emergency obstetrics exercises.
